Tonight is National Night Out, where neighbors come out to meet their neighbors, their local police, and have a good time while helping to reduce crime in their neighborhoods. The Leesburg Police Department is sponsoring several events around town tonight, starting at 6 PM at the Crossroads Baptist Church at 850 Edwards Ferry Rd. and moving to the Greenway Farms Pool House (55 Meade Dr. SW) at 8 PM. There will be events for kids including a moon bounce and barrel train rides and lots of info for adults on how to reduce crime in your neighborhood and keep your home safe. Nearly every neighborhood has some event planned, so check with your HOA to see what’s up.

Admission is free and you’ll have access to lots of cool aircraft like the classic B-17 operated by the Commemorative Air Force, food, plane rides, and other events for kids and adults. The always-popular hangar dance with a live swing band and dancing, classic cars, and other great events round out the open house.

Volunteers are needed to help with setting up the event, parking, providing directions, and other logistical functions. If you’d like a behind-the-scenes look at how the airport operates, consider lending a hand. You can contact Tom Toth at 703-443-8684 for more details on how to help out.

As the day grows closer, watch here for more details on events, aircraft, and other news about the open house.

One of the great things about Leesburg is the number of live events that happen every weekend. The trick is being able to find them all. It used to be a real challenge to find live music in town and to learn about the local talent. A few years ago, a group of downtown merchants got together with local musicians and started Acoustic on the Green, a series of live performances on the lawn in front of town hall. What started as a somewhat informal series of outdoor performances on Saturday nights has grown into an amazing concert series that provides lovers of live, local music with a great way to see their favorite artists right in the middle of downtown Leesburg.

The series is free, and open to anyone who can get their blankets and lawn chairs spread out fast enough to claim a spot. Concert start at 7 PM and usually last until around 9. Since it’s right next door to the town parking garage, and right around the corner from numerous restaurants, it’s easy to make an evening of it. Stop in to La Lou’s, China King, or Leesburg Restaurant for a quick bite, catch the performance, then wander up to Shoe’s for a cup of coffee and dessert before calling it a night. Can’t beat that for a nice summer evening in Leesburg!

Here’s a quick reminder about the grand re-opening ceremony at Rust Library tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 AM. This is a chance to be one of the first people to see the renovated library and all of the new features. Should be fun.

And since it’s going to be warm, take a swim suit and towel and wander next door to the new Aquatic Center at Ida Lee Park. It’s only $5 for town residents and if you live in Leesburg, you can get in an hour before everyone else.

UPDATE: The library opening looks like it was a HUGE success. There were at least 500-750 people ready to enter when the doors opened on the great new meeting rooms, teen center, computer labs, and racks and racks of brand new DVDs, CDs, and audio books. It was pretty darn impressive. Saw Frank Holtz, Marty Martinez, Dave Butler, Katie Hammler, and John Wells. The Mariachi band entertaining in the lobby was the high point for me!

The first annual “DC’s Wine Country – Food and Wine Festival” is this weekend, July 10-12, at historic Whitehall Manor in Bluemont. This promises to be quite a different event from the usual wine or beer event where the visitors race from tent to tent clutching an empty glass. This event will focus on 20 of the 24 wineries in Loudoun Co., each pouring their four best vintages. But the real difference is the food that will accompany the wines. A catered buffet will be available in the manor house for guests and judging from the menu, it should make for a nice evening of food and wine.

The event begins at 6 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 5 PM on Sunday. See the map below for details on the location.

An additional note, the event is looking for volunteers to help each evening. Volunteers get admission to the event and dinner in return for helping with parking and logistics. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Patrick at 703-973-9600.

A warm, sunny weekend in Leesburg promises to offer up a LOT of Fourth of July festivities. There are several evenings to catch fireworks around the area. And there are numerous community celebrations throughout the day on the 3rd and 4th.

Here’s a list of things on our calendar for the weekend.

Friday, July 3rd

Leesburg’s First Friday kicks off the weekend of celebration. Come stroll downtown Leesburg, visit with friends, and check out the new shops and old favorites. Starts around 6 PM and goes until 9.

Fireworks fans can start early with shows in several surrounding communities on Friday night.

Lovettesville Community Center, party starts at 6 PM with fireworks start at 9:15

Lansdowne Resort, fireworks start after the concert which begins at 7:30 PM

Saturday, July 4th

The real celebration starts with the Leesburg 4th of July Parade, which rolls down King St. from Ida Lee Park to the Safeway parking lot, starting at 10 AM. You can’t miss the inaugural appearance of Stanley Caulkins as a parade participant!

Celebrations

Leesburg: Ida Lee Park opens at 6 PM for music and fun prior to the fireworks display at 9:30. Word to the wise, the traffic afterwards is horrific through town and the fastest way to anywhere is to go the opposite way and take the bypass to wherever you’re trying to go.

Middleburg: all day at the Middleburg Community Center, with the serious party running from 6-9 PM.

Fireworks

Leesburg fireworks – 9:30 PM at Ida Lee Park. (Rain Date: July 5)

Franklin Park Fireworks Display—9:30 p.m. (Rain Date: July 5)

Ashburn Village Fireworks Display—9:30 p.m. (Rain Date: July 5)

Middleburg Community Center Fireworks Display—Dark (Rain Date: July 5)

Hillsboro Community Center Fireworks Display—Dark (Rain Date: July 6)

Sunday, July 5th

The Bluemont Concert at Dodona Manor is a good way to recover from the 4th. A relaxing picnic on the lawn seems like a nice way to spend the evening, starting at 7 PM.
